There’s a new visitor attraction in Saarland Germany. A treetop walk almost 1,300 metres in length, that ends in a lookout tower. From the tower, you have an impressive view of a valley and the Saarschleife. This is a beautiful river bend in the Saar and a regional landmark. Rudi is one of the walk’s foremen. We accompanied him during the creation of the treetop walk.

1,300 metres through forest and meadows

The treetop walk winds through the forest on the Saarschleife at a height of up to 23 metres. To get to know these natural surroundings better, there are learning and experience stations for visitors along the walk. The treetop walk is wheelchair accessible and open year-round. A special natural experience with magnificent views.

"You have to have a bit of a head for heights."

Rudi has been working for his company for 35 years – since he completed his training. He came to the first treetop walk by chance, but the excitement immediately grabbed him. Even today, the walks still fascinate him – especially working up high. When cutting the walkways high up, you need a steady hand and absolute concentration.

Making full use of the chainsaw

In the workshop, the foundation is laid for the treetop walk: supports in the form of tripods. The logs that serve as components for the tripods are cut precisely to length at the top and bolted to a steel support. Rudi uses the STIHL MS 661 chainsaw for this. With this powerful chainsaw, he can easily cut through the thick logs.

Safely equipped for every action

Working on a cherry picker is a real balancing act, meaning it's important that your personal protective equipment fits well. Besides cut protection, freedom of movement is particularly relevant here. STIHL protective clothing uses elastic inserts and a good fit, for clothing that's comfortable to wear.

Who is responsible for the walk?

The treetop walk is a collaboration between Holzbau Dengler – as construction experts – and Erlebnis Akademie AG – as the operator of the walk. Following joint planning, the entire walk – along with the lookout tower – was built in just three months. The walk is truly unique and was designed and constructed specifically for the landscape and conditions on the Saarschleife.
