Easy starting, clean running – decompression valve and electronic ignition system

The decompression valve, in conjunction with ElastoStart, reduces the tension on the starter cord and makes starting easier. The way it works is that the decompression valve allows some of the compressed mix to escape from the cylinder when starting. The electronic ignition system ensures that the fuel mix burns better and with lower emissions by delivering a stable spark in every speed range with an extended spark duration.

Easy to maintain and service – Everything under one cover

Just open the quick-release locks, remove the one-part cover – and you can carry out three maintenance operations on your new chainsaw right away:

• Maintaining the air filter
• Checking the spark plug
• Cleaning the cylinder fins

User-friendly and convenient – captive nuts

The nuts on the chain sprocket cover will not get lost when changing the cutting attachment, due to their captive nature ensuring they are held in the housing. The MS 261 is the first STIHL chainsaw to be fitted with captive nuts.

STIHL side chain tensioning

Tightening up the saw chain is easy with the side tensioner, which avoids contact with the sharp teeth.

STIHL filler system

The fuel tank and oil tank have large openings for easy filling with no spills. The transparent material of the fuel tank allows the fuel level to be checked at any time. The patented STIHL special tank closures are easy to open and close without requiring tools.

STIHL Ematic chain lubricating system

The optimum quantity of oil can be set via the STIHL Ematic system according to which cutting attachment you are using or which type of wood you are cutting. The chain lubricant is delivered in measured amounts exactly where it is needed. You use up to 50% less chain oil, depending on the cutting attachment and type of wood.
